Consulting

In this day and age where most of the world is interconnected, learning should no longer be hindered by distance nor confined in the four corners of a classroom. This section of my website is particularly informed by my passion for teaching students and for promoting equitable access to quality engineering education to everyone around the world. My first experience of this kind of learning was more than ten years ago when, as an undergraduate, I discovered MIT’s Open Courseware. During my graduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin, I also experienced a kind of team-teaching in what one of my professors – the illustrious Dr. David Maidment – called “classroom without walls”. As a graduate student, I also came across Coursera - a platform where anyone can audit a course for free. Finally, in 2020, the whole world was shattered by a pandemic and many classes around the world became virtual – including my classes at Texas A&M University. Many tutoring services have become available; however, most are profit-focused and the classes that are free are not meant to be a one-on-one interaction that students sometimes crave.

Thus, I am pleased to offer my personal virtual consultation service for civil engineering students around the world. This service is COMPLETELY FREE and is solely motivated by my passion to glorify God by serving others through engineering pedagogy. If you want to test it out, the following link contains time slots where you can sign up.

Engineering courses that I know very well are Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Engineering, Hydrology, Theory of Structures and Geographic Information Systems but I can probably help you in other lower-division math and science courses (except maybe for Engineering Graphics! I was really bad at that class!). I am also knowledgeable on basic coding using python, statistics, and data analysis for anyone who might need help in their theses. Finally, if you currently have a non-class-related academic struggle – such as if you are conflicted on choosing between majors or are a senior interested in pursuing graduate school and would like some independent advice from an academic in the United States, I would also love to have a discussion with you.

Looking forward to meet y'all!

- Dr. Jonathan Lasco

Notes and disclaimers

1. This service is not meant to absolve students from completing their course requirements on their own.

2. The sessions will be conducted via zoom and you can bring others to join with you in the tutoring session.

3. You are encouraged to verify my statements on your own. I will not be responsible for your grades in your own classes.

4. I can withhold this service - or cancel appointments - at any time for any reason.

5. This service is not meant to be an get-out-of-jail free card for students working on their assignments which, ideally, students should work on their own. The primary purpose of education is learning, and I would be causing more harm than good if I help you out on your assignments by simply giving you the answers. Rather, my idea is to reinforce concepts discussed in class that you may not have understood. Think of me as your second/third/fourth option if your own professors are busy.

6. I may not be able to answer all your questions satisfactorily, but I will do my best!

7. Even though I will not charge anyone for my service, I will greatly appreciate anyone who chooses to support me (donation link: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=M6FT5AFY3QNDQ&no_recurring=0&currency_code=USD ). I have ideas that I want to carry out in the future to promote equitable access to quality engineering education around the world.
